GARGANTUA WEB is
an add-in allowing GARGANTUA users
to connect to their databases via the Internet
or an intranet.
The Web module comes in two
versions:
- A Web module dedicated to searching and
consulting the content of documentation databases
- A full Web module, which allows, besides
searching and consulting, distant management
of the databases, including documents modifying,
inserting, indexing, etc. (and all this is
done just with a web browser).
The two database engines (relational
database engine and fulltext one), which are
part and parcel of GARGANTUA,
give all types of search a high degree of speed
and relevance.
GARGANTUA WEB’s
user interface can be customized.
You can add the logos, colors, or slogans of
your profession / organization. You can choose
to keep only the functions you need.
A GARGANTUA user
does not have to deal with the conversion to
HTML when he / she inserts scanned, text, … files
in the databases since GARGANTUA systematically
does the converting. Nonetheless, stored documents
remain in native format, which makes them available
for later editing.
GARGANTUA WEB has
been built in Java. It uses GARGANTUA’s
API library and therefore is an optimal product
as far as openness and security are concerned.
GARGANTUA WEB offers
a user-friendly interface that a person who occasionally
surfs the web should find easy to use. It includes
many functions of GARGANTUA’s
client versions. This makes it easier to teach
and learn how to use the module.
Databases can be public (any
user can access them) or private (accessed via
identification). They are protected with the
same security levels as in the classic version.
As it is a multilingual
product, many Web users from all over
the world can utilize it.
1) Portal
GARGANTUA WEB is
a genuine portal providing access to your company’s
information. It enables you to put forward the
messages you wish to disseminate. First, the
user must choose the interface language. Next
he / she must choose the base type (public or
private). Then, according to his / her rights,
he / she can connect to the different documentation
bases.
GARGANTUA’s
multibase structure is preserved, with the same
security levels regarding access to objects and
contents.

The homepage can be customized
Public databases can be accessed
without identification from any workstation,
inside or outside the enterprise, whereas private
databases can only be accessed with login and
password. Identification defines a profile including
access rights and authorized operations.
When a user has been identified, he / she can
see the list of the (fully or partially) accessible
databases.
Then, the connection is established.

2) Consulting
folders and documents
The documents, stored in native
mode, are converted on-the-fly to HTML; users
do not have to deal with the conversion.
Explore interfaces can be customized
according to the type of base, the type of documents
and the type of information you wish to pass
on. The presentation can be different when you
choose to connect in Search mode instead of Explore
mode.
GARGANTUA WEB enables
you to display the classifying scheme of GARGANTUA’s
classic version as well as all the available
object information (indexes, existence of a note,
etc.)
The interface and the list of
the functions available for one particular object
change according to the connection mode you choose
and according to your rights on the objects.

Left: classifying
scheme.
Right:
objects inside a folder
with list of functions
available for one object.

Presentation of a folder’s documents
as thumbnails whose sizes can be chosen
If you click on a thumbnail, it is displayed
in full screen
(and
still offers a direct
access to the list of
the functions that can
be applied to the document)
In Search mode, a result can be
displayed as follows (for example for folders):

Or as follows : a proprietary
plugin, specially designed for image documents,
allows their local editing and perfect printing.

3) Downloading
and editing
GARGANTUA WEB enables
you to save the documents you are consulting.
When they have been saved on your PC, you can
update them and then put them back in the initial
structure.
4) Object
inserting - deleting: online work and publication
GARGANTUA WEB’s
full version enables you to create classifying
schemes, index models, to create and index folders,
to insert and index documents, to index .doc,
.xls, .txt, etc. documents in full text, to create
notes, to edit indexes, etc.
As soon as a new document is
inserted via the Web module, it becomes available
to all authorized users in GARGANTUA.

Moreover, the full Web module enables
you to delete objects.
Naturally all these operations
are subject to the rights that have been assigned
to the user connected via the Web.
5) Search
functions
All the search modes available in GARGANTUA’s
client version can be used via its Web interface.
For example, GARGANTUA WEB users
can create private search templates. Among the
main search modes, you find:
- Simple search, which combines full text
and indexes
- Boolean search applied to index field contents.
It may be combined with fulltext search.
- Fulltext search launched in text document
contents.
- Public search template: search form created
by an administrator and accessible to all users
- Private search template: available only
to the user who created it
All these search modes can be applied to a whole
database or restricted to some part of it.
6) Search
results
Search results are displayed as lists of items,
as thumbnails, etc. according to selected interface
parameters. Once more, almost all the functions
of GARGANTUA’s classic
version are preserved, including the “next”, “previous”,
“first”, “last”, etc.
arrows enabling you to browse through the results.

text search
7) Managing
permissions
The permissions and security levels are exactly
the same as those assigned by the administrator
in GARGANTUA’s client
version. Every single user is given a set of
individual or inherited rights (= rights inherited
from a group) on the databases, the folders,
the documents,
…
Search results depend on these rights and the
same goes for object (folders, documents, etc.)
access. Two users having different access rights
or belonging to different groups do not see the
same classifying schemes. They also get different
results with the same query.
GARGANTUA WEB respects ORANGE
BOOK C2 and ITSEC (European standard) E2 security
specifications.
8) Statistics
module
|
GARGANTUA
WEB provides data regarding
the frequency of use of the documents
stored in the database. You can activate
filters in order to get exploitable
statistics from specific criteria.
Every
action a distant user performs on the
databases -- whether he / she browses
through the databases or enriches them
-- is registered in a log.
